Kim Jeong-hui set down a single sparse orchid with a parched brush, then filled the empty ground around it with words. In exile, he wrote that he had thrown off any wish to paint it well and let his hand move as the heart pleased. The leaves seem scattered, yet not one is excess. In this painting I see that only a person who has honed himself for a long time can finally let the strength go. That freedom, which looks like clumsiness, is a height reached at the end of decades of restraint.
