Kim Hong-do painted a single moment in a blacksmith's forge. One man revives the fire with the bellows, two bring their hammers down in turn, and another grips the iron with tongs. Not one of them is idle, and if the rhythm breaks the iron cools or someone is hurt. Glowing iron, once the moment passes, hardens. In this scene I see that to temper something solid, the work must be done while it is hot, with many breathing as one. Iron and people alike must be struck before they cool if they are to take their shape.
