This landscape, attributed to Chen Zhuo, holds mountain and water in harmony within one scene. It came from the tradition of Chinese landscape, yet the heart that settles before mountain and water is the same anywhere. I see here how the differing natures of mountain and water form one scene. The mountain does not move and is firm; the water flows and changes without cease. The two opposite natures meet, and only then is the landscape complete. The human heart too must hold both a firmness to keep and a suppleness to let flow. With only one of the two, no landscape forms.
