Kim Hong-do carried a summer scene across with a light brush. A lotus risen from muddy water blooms clean, and above it a single dragonfly hovers lightly. The lotus does not blame the filthy mud; from within it drew up its own color. In this painting I see that what a being is spoken by is not where it was born but what it blooms into. The mud is no blemish on the lotus but the ground the lotus overcame.
