Origin Story

Era
Ancient Greece, the age of myth

It may surprise you that milk lies at the root of galaxy, the word for those vast wheels of stars. The hazy band of stars that stretches across a clear night sky is what we call the Milky Way. To the ancient Greeks, this dim river of light brought milk to mind. Since the Greek word for milk was gala, they named this band of stars galaxias kyklos — the "milky circle." Greek myth even told that it was a path formed when milk from the goddess Hera's breast spilled across the heavens. The word crossed into English as galaxy, and the English name Milky Way springs from the very same image. The sea of stars, it turns out, was once imagined as a river of milk.

The English Milky Way is a direct translation of the Greek galaxias by way of the Latin via lactea ("the road of milk") — a rare case of a single image carried intact across several languages.
