Open this book and you cannot help but marvel that a nineteenth-century French aristocrat could see through the light and shadow of democracy with such precision. Tocqueville praises the blessings that equality brings, yet he warns of the "tyranny of the majority" that arises when people come to love equality more than freedom. Reading his analysis—that the desire to be like everyone else ultimately isolates us and makes us hide within the crowd—I came face to face, painfully, with my own self, losing its distinct voice while trapped in the gaze of others.
