When I first encountered this mysterious text, discovered in the Egyptian desert in 1945, I felt the framework of the religion I had known break apart. Instead of miracles or doctrine, it holds only the 114 wisdom-sayings Jesus left behind. The passage "Split a piece of wood, and I am there; lift up the stone, and you will find me there" is especially astonishing. It conveys the profound insight that salvation lies not in believing in someone outside us, but in awakening to the inner light already within.
