The sight of mortal men—who seem like pieces in the gods' game—craving immortal glory despite their finite lives gives a strange thrill. If life ends, after all, in death, then the very trajectory we forge today through fierce striving is itself the meaning. The blood-soaked field of Troy is, in the end, a miniature of our own lives.
