When I first read this book, I was overwhelmed by the sheer weight of the word "liberty." Mill speaks not merely of freedom from the state. He warns that society's prevailing opinion and custom can become a violence that strangles the individual soul. Whenever I catch myself conforming uncritically to the thinking of the majority, I open this book again. For it reminds me that true liberty is the solitary courage to choose, and take responsibility for, my own way of living—so long as I bring no harm to others.
