Trace the roots of the freedom and rights we now enjoy as naturally as the air we breathe, and you will inevitably come face to face with John Locke. I read with a shiver, realizing what a powerful weapon this seemingly ordinary declaration — that all human beings are born equal and free — was against the old, oppressive order of the seventeenth century. His philosophy, insisting on the individual's right to property and the right to resist unjust power, makes me ask, with a chill, whether the foundations of the society we live in today are truly sound.
