Whenever I read the writing of Yeonam Park Ji-won, I am struck anew by the keen insight with which he sees through his age. The way Master Heo, a bookish recluse who did nothing but read, suddenly comes to hold the economy in the palm of his hand is exhilarating, yet it carries a weighty rebuke aimed at a ruling class bound by stale convention. The bitter ending, in which Master Heo sets out to build an ideal state on a deserted island only to draw his own limits and return, mirrors exactly our own self-portrait, agonizing between ideal and reality.
