When I first opened this vast novel, I was instantly drawn into the fierce arguments traded among the three brothers. Through the ruin of a single family, Dostoevsky throws out the heavy themes of God, freedom, and human evil. That chaotic inner landscape, where there is neither perfect goodness nor absolute evil, is in the end a portrait of ourselves. You will find yourself wanting to answer these enormous questions—ones that only a writer who has descended to the very bottom of the human soul could ever have written.
