宙

집
Day 6 · Lv.1 Beginner

Origin

Time (宙) combines roof (宀) with 由. Originally "ridgepole of a house," it expanded to mean the flow of time. If 宇 is space, 宙 is time — the entire axis from past to future.

Structure

宀(roof) + 由(from) = Flow of time

由 means "from." Time flowing under a roof — generations continuing under one roof. Grandfather, father, me, son — this is 宙 (time).

宙 in Philosophy

Zhuangzi — "Past and present, going and coming — that is 宙." Time flows unceasingly, and we stand upon its current.
Buddhism — Buddhist time: from "刹那 (ksana, instant)" to "劫 (kalpa, aeon)." Even in an instant, eternity exists.

Expressions with 宙

宇宙洪荒 (우주홍황) — Space-time is vast and wild. Second phrase of Thousand Character Classic.
宙斯 (주스) — Zeus in Chinese characters. Even in the West, the ruler of sky and time is the supreme god.

Quotes on Time

Confucius — "The passing of time is like this — it doesn't rest day or night." Time flows like a river.
Seneca — "It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it."

Poems with 宙

By the River (Analects) · Confucius (551-479 BCE)

子在川上曰 逝者如斯夫 不舍晝夜

Zi zai chuan shang yue Shi zhe ru si fu Bu she zhou ye

The Master stood by the river and said: What passes is like this — It does not rest day or night

From the Analects. 2,500 years ago, Confucius watched a river and lamented time's flow. Water flows and never returns — so does time. The oldest time management advice: "Don't waste today."

Time Worldwide

Physics — Einstein: "Time is not absolute." Time dilation. Where Zhuangzi's 宙 meets Einstein's relativity.

What 宙 Teaches

AI predicts the future from past data. But 宙 (time) always exceeds predictions. Today's misfortune may become tomorrow's blessing. Be humble before time's mystery. What AI cannot predict is your tomorrow.
