📖 Origin

The character '致' was originally drawn in oracle-bone script as "a person running with something like a staff in hand," conveying the sense of "to reach, to arrive." Bronze script shows a more regularized form, evolving into a combination of '至' (to reach) and '攵' (to strike). By the small seal script it settled into a form resembling the present one, and it expanded to a variety of meanings such as "to send," "to accomplish," and "to devote one's utmost sincerity."

🔍 Structure

致 = 至 (to reach) + 攵 (to strike)

'致' is both a phono-semantic and an associative compound combining '至' (to reach, to arrive) with '攵' (to strike). To '至,' meaning "to reach," is added '攵,' the image of striking with a switch or rod in hand, conveying the sense of forcefully "causing something to reach" a destination. For example, whereas '送' (to send) simply means to "send" an object, '致' is an expression emphasizing the will to "make it arrive" at the recipient and "make a result come about."

📜 Classical Poetry (1)

A Song of Offering Wine

Du Fu (712-770) — Tang

致酒行,行致酒。 宛轉歌,歌宛轉。 天子貴,安如山。 百官公,佩玉珂。 君不見,管仲相桓公,霸諸侯,一匡天下。 嗟爾功名於此止,豈徒白日向西流。

A song of offering wine, the song offers wine. A winding, circling song, the song winds and circles. The Son of Heaven is exalted, at ease as a mountain. The hundred officials are upright, wearing jade pendants and ornaments. Do you not see—Guan Zhong aided Duke Huan, mastered the feudal lords, and set the world aright. Alas, would your merit and fame end here? How could it be that the white sun merely streams off to the west?

This poem sings of the society and history of its age through the image of Du Fu offering wine and singing. In the opening line '致酒行,' '致' is used directly in the sense of "to offer, to present" wine. Citing the historical facts that Guan Zhong aided Duke Huan to "set right (致)" the world and "bring the feudal lords to hegemony (致)," it shows '致' functioning as a forceful verb meaning to achieve a goal or bring about a result.
