This poem is a farewell song the Tang poet Wang Wei composed while sending a friend off to the western frontier, with the place name "Yang Pass (陽關)" appearing as its heart. Yang Pass was then a fortress on the western border; beyond it lay an unknown land empty of acquaintances, which heightens the solitude of crossing the boundary of the brightness and civilization that yang symbolizes. Here yang means more than mere sunlight—it signifies the warmth of human bonds and the heat of the civilized world, playing a key role in expressing the sorrow of leaving them behind.
