📖 Origin
The character '麗' derives from a pictograph depicting two deer standing side by side. In ancient bronze inscriptions, two deer appear forming a symmetry or arranged as a pair, showing that people of the time regarded deer as beautiful and graceful animals. Later, in the small seal script, the form became more standardized, developing into a shape resembling the present '麗,' and its meaning expanded to 'the lovely,' 'the beautiful,' and 'the splendid.' This character illustrates a case in which aesthetic sensibility developed from the beautiful bearing of paired deer.
🔍 Structure
麗 = 鹿 (deer) + 鹿 (deer) (variant form)
This character is interpreted as depicting two deer standing side by side. The deer has long been regarded as a beautiful and graceful animal, and a pair of them expresses a beauty made all the more striking. Whereas a similar character, '並 (byeong),' depicts two people standing side by side to mean 'to place side by side,' '麗' among these emphasizes 'loveliness,' 'splendor,' and 'harmonious beauty.'
🏛 Philosophy
Confucianism
'麗' symbolizes the harmony of inner beauty and outer form that Confucianism pursues. Confucius said, "Only when refinement and substance are well blended does one become a noble person (文質彬彬然後君子)," holding that outward splendor (麗) achieves true beauty only when it balances with inner virtue (文). It teaches that complete virtue is realized only when formal beauty harmonizes with moral worth.
Taoism
'麗' can be interpreted as a concept contrasting with the plain, natural beauty that Taoism speaks of. Zhuangzi said, "Heaven and earth possess great beauty yet do not speak of it (天地有大美而不言)," valuing the inexpressible beauty inherent in nature over human ornamentation or outward splendor. Thus the splendor that '麗' symbolizes can at times signify the artificial adornment against which Taoism cautions.

💬 Proverbs
Zhuangzi (莊子) — "Perfect Joy" (至樂) Chapter
"Heaven and earth possess great beauty yet do not speak of it; the four seasons follow clear laws yet do not discuss them; the myriad things have fixed principles yet do not explain them." This saying embodies the Taoist thought of honoring the wordless beauty and principle inherent in nature over outward splendor. It awakens us to the essential beauty that lies beyond the artificial beauty '麗' symbolizes.
Chu Ci (楚辭) — "Li Sao" (離騷)
"Possessing beauty within and cultivating ability without (內美外修能)." This is a line in which Qu Yuan sang of his lofty ideals and integrity, expressing the spirit of combining noble inner virtue with outer capability. It suggests that '麗' goes beyond mere outward beauty to pursue an attitude of harmony between beauty and ability completed through inner cultivation.

🌍 World Culture
Western Culture (Greece and Rome)
In ancient Greek and Roman culture, the beauty symbolized by '麗' was pursued through harmony, proportion, and perfect form. As in the golden ratio of the Parthenon or Michelangelo's David, 'loveliness' and 'greatness' were expressed through the perfect balance of the human body and ideal form. This represents one pillar of Western aesthetics, which pursued a beauty refined by human reason while reproducing the appearance of nature.
🤖 AI Era Lesson
"The character '麗' teaches us a deep meaning that, in every age, goes beyond mere visual beauty. Algorithms can generate flawless faces and figures, and digital technology can realize splendid images beyond imagination, yet true '麗' arises from the meaning, harmony, and depth of soul contained within. Even amid the splendor that technology produces, we must ceaselessly ask what is truly beautiful, and how the inherent dignity and worth of the human being can be sublimated into 'loveliness.' We need the wisdom to seek the essential beauty that lies beyond the transience of appearance, and to make our lives '麗 (lovely)' through the emotion and empathy that only humans possess—gifts no technology can provide."

Ballad of the Beautiful Women (麗人行)
Du Fu (712–770) — Tang
三月三日天氣新, 長安水邊多麗人。 態濃意遠淑且真, 肌理細膩骨肉勻。 繡羅衣裳照暮春, 蹙金孔雀銀麒麟。
On the third day of the third month the air is fresh and new; by the waters of Chang'an, many beautiful women. Their bearing rich, their thoughts profound, gentle and true; their skin fine and smooth, flesh and bone evenly formed. Embroidered silk garments shine in the late spring light, with gold-threaded peacocks and silver unicorns in gathered folds.
Du Fu's 'Ballad of the Beautiful Women' is a poem satirizing the lavish life of Yang Guifei's sisters during Emperor Xuanzong of Tang's reign. In this poem '麗人' refers to beautiful women, and by delicately depicting their splendid attire and outstanding looks it shows the height of the 'beauty' and 'splendor' that '麗' represents. The meaning of '麗' is employed paradoxically to expose the dark underside of the age and the contradictions of contemporary society hidden beneath the dazzling surface.
