📜 Name Through History
📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "釜山" combines 釜 (cauldron) + 山 (mountain). Jeungsan in Yeongdo-gu resembles an inverted cauldron — hence the name. Originally written 富山 (rich mountain), changed to 釜山 around 1470. Recorded in 「Sejong Sillok Jiriji」 (1454) as Dongnae's Busanpo. Joseon's primary port for Japanese trade (Waegwan). Opened to international trade in 1876 by the Treaty of Ganghwa.
