📖 Origin of the Hanja
Originally "Dalguebol (達句伐)" — meaning "great field" in Silla speech. Later sinified as 大丘 (great hill). In 1750, the character 丘 was changed to 邱 to avoid Confucius's personal name (孔丘) — a Confucian taboo (避諱). 邱 is a variant of 丘 with identical meaning. The basin geography makes Daegu Korea's hottest city in summer.
