📖 Origin of the Hanja
Originally Baekje's Mujinju (武珍州). Renamed Gwangju (光州 — "light district") in 940 by Goryeo's Taejo. The "light" comes from Mudeungsan ("incomparable mountain"), the city's guardian peak. Site of the 1929 Gwangju Student Movement and the 1980 May 18 Democratization Movement — a sacred ground of Korean democracy.
