📜 Name Through History
📖 Origin of the Hanja
"Seoul" is pure Korean (not hanja). It evolved from Silla's capital "Seorabeol (徐羅伐)" — "Seobeol" → "Seoul". When written in hanja, it appears as 京 (capital) or 漢城 (Han fortress). Baekje's Onjo founded Wirye-seong here in BC 18. Joseon moved its capital to Hanyang in 1394. In 1948, the Republic of Korea designated "Seoul" — the only Korean major city without an official hanja name.
