📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "蔚" depicts lush, dense vegetation. Renamed from Ulju (蔚州) to Ulsan (蔚山) in 1413 by Taejong of Joseon. Originally Silla's Gulahwachon — "the bent river". Today Korea's largest industrial city — home to Hyundai Motors, Hyundai Heavy Industries, SK Energy, LG Chem. Produces roughly 5% of Korea's GDP. Bangudae Petroglyphs (National Treasure #285) depict 7,000-year-old whale hunting — Korea's earliest art.
