醫 (healer) + 師 (master) — "master of healing"
📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "醫" combines a quiver (matrix containing arrow) with wine (酉) — ancient healing was sacred ritual using herbs and wine. "師" originally meant a military commander → master of a field. So 醫師 = "master of healing". In Eastern tradition, doctors were not technicians but moral beings — exemplified by Heo Jun's 「Donguibogam」 (1610).
