📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "會" depicts vessels gathering — assembly. "社" depicts gathering on earth (土) for ritual. 會社 = "an organization of gathered people". Originally a Japanese translation for "joint-stock company" coined by Yukichi Fukuzawa in 1862. Adopted in Korea in the 1880s.
"會社員 = "one of the gathered" — doing together what one cannot alone."
