📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "黃" depicts a person wearing jade at the waist — yellow from jade's color. Said to descend from the Yellow Emperor of China. Korean Hwang traces to Hwang Rak, a Han-era scholar who came as envoy and stayed. Hwang Hui (1363-1452) served as Joseon's prime minister for 24 years under King Sejong, becoming the symbol of incorruptible governance.
