The hanja "吳" was the southern state of Wu in ancient China, founded BC 11th century when Prince Taibo yielded his throne to a younger brother. Korean Oh clans descend from Goryeo-era Oh In-yu of Haeju Oh. Oh Dal-je (1609-1637) was one of the "Three Scholars" who died refusing to surrender to the Qing.
