A musical line formed by a succession of pitches rising and falling.

The melody is the most memorable element of a song. It's made from the combination of pitch, rhythm, and the intervals between one note and the next.

Vocal melody: the line the singer sings
Guitar solo: a melody played on an instrument
Riff: a short, repeating melodic pattern
Counter-melody: a secondary line supporting the main melody
Practical Tips
Memorable melodies usually move within about an octave, mixing stepwise motion (neighboring notes) with leaps (notes further apart) in good measure.
