This is an anonymous Chinese painting that renders, with quiet composure, a branch hung with ripened fruit. The neat charm of Chinese bird-and-flower painting runs through it, yet the meaning the fruit conveys is the same in any land. In this painting I see the history of fruition. A single fruit ripens only after enduring the spring's blossom, the summer's sunlight, that long stretch of time. We see only the result, but within it all the unseen seasons are held. Before what has ripened, we should reckon together the time it has passed through.
