This is a pair of six-panel folding screens in which the Japanese Kano-school painter Kano Koi drew birds and flowers on gold ground. Upon the golden field, the living things of the seasons unfold in splendor. In this broad surface I see the balance of empty space and filling. The gold does not fill every place. Because there are places left empty, the birds and flowers come alive more clearly. To fill to the full is not the only abundance. True fullness comes from knowing what to leave empty. Empty space is not lack but a generosity that lets the subject shine.
