This is a chaekgeori screen, six panels filled with books and scholars' implements. In an age when books were precious, people spread such screens to keep books beside them, if only as a picture. Unable to gather the real things, they consoled the heart with an image. In this density I see longing. To paint what one desires and set it on the wall is not vanity but aspiration. What a person wishes to keep beside them is the very figure they wish to become. The heart that wished to be surrounded by books was, in the end, a resolve to become such a person.
