Bookshelf (Chaekgado), 19th century, Joseon dynasty, MFAB .824a-d (2 of 4)
"What was the wish of the one who moved a bookshelf into painting?"
📝ONGO's Reflection
Books and objects are arranged in good order across the tiered shelves of this chaekgado. An unnamed artisan, with a structure that expresses depth, raised a three-dimensional study upon a flat surface. To paint books is to yearn toward learning, and the will to look upon that yearning every day. This painting was born not because there were many books but because books were held dear. What one paints as precious lays bare exactly what one reveres.
