An unknown painter rendered the tiger, that warder-off of misfortune, not as a thing of terror but as a familiar creature with crossed eyes and a comical upturn at the corners of its mouth. On the branch above, a magpie chatters down at the tiger without the slightest fear. This painting, which turns the object of dread into a thing of mirth, was the wisdom of ordinary people who sought to tame the fearsome with laughter. I see in it that fear grows smaller not only when we stare it down, but also when we manage, just once, to laugh it off.
