This is one leaf of a Chinese album painted by Li Jian in 1789. Within a surface no larger than a palm, mountain and water are held complete. My heart goes to this small canvas. Even without a great wall mural, within a single sheet of paper the painter set a whole world wholly inside. Size is not depth. When one gives full care to a small place, great meaning takes up dwelling there. A person's days too are small, yet within them the grain of a whole lifetime is held.
