Painting of Characters on Eight-panel Folding Screen

문자도 여덟 폭 병풍
🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"If a single character can hold the duty of a person, by which character am I living?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

Filial love, brotherly respect, loyalty, faith, courtesy, righteousness, integrity, shame. Eight characters flow from right to left, laying out the duties a person ought to keep. Birds and flowers and fish were painted within the letters, surely from a wish to make hard teachings familiar to the eye. Before this screen I see that duty is not something memorized with the head but something kept before the eyes each day and worked into the body. Hung on a wall, the characters lead a person to grow into their likeness.
