Yeojido
"What was the heart that sought to hold the mountains and rivers of an entire nation on a single sheet?"
📝ONGO's Reflection
This is a nationwide map of late Joseon, made in the reign of King Jeongjo. Also called the Aguk-chongdo, it held the positions of mountains, rivers, and towns densely upon one sheet. I see, in this map, the effort to thread scattered things into one. When towns and waterways that lay apart were gathered into one place, the shape of the nation finally appeared. One must know the whole to chart a path, and must know where one stands to decide the next step. Knowing one's own place is the starting point of every direction.
