DAY 69

The Mind Is as Hard to Hold as the Wind

Bhagavad Gītā 6:34
기원전 2세기경 편찬(서사시 전승)
ORIGINAL
cañcalaṁ hi manaḥ ... tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣkaram
📜 THE VERSE

The mind is restless, turbulent, stubborn, and strong; to hold it, I feel, is as hard as holding the wind.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Faced with how hard my mind is to hold, do I blame myself and give up before I begin?

📝Reflection

I love this verse, for here it is not the old teacher but the wavering disciple who honestly confesses that holding the mind is as hard as holding the wind. This honest admission is a great comfort to me when the practice of the mind feels difficult. That the mind will not be held is not my private flaw but the very nature of mind, which a disciple thousands of years ago felt just the same. On days my mind will not be held at all, I recall this disciple's honest word and stop blaming myself.

🌱Apply It Today

Even if your mind will not settle today, do not blame yourself — regard it as 'hard as the wind by nature,' and simply begin again.
