Origin Story

Era
The Korean Empire period

Ha — this single word holds the heartbreak of an entire nation! By the sexagenary calendar, 1905 was the year Eulsa (乙巳年), when imperial Japan forced through the Eulsa Treaty and stripped Korea of its diplomatic sovereignty. From then on, whenever the weather or the mood turned bleak and forlorn, people would call it "eulsa-nyeon-seureopda" — "like the year Eulsa." The very air of that desolate era became a word. The sound was gradually worn smooth: eulsa-nyeon-seureopda → eulseu-nyeon-seureopda → eulssiyeon-seureopda. And this is no mere folk legend. The form "eulsa-nyeon-sireopda" appears in Yi Hae-jo's 1908 "new novel" Binsangseol, documentary proof that the word was already in use just three years after the treaty. A whole age's despair lies fossilized inside one word.

It is a rare case of a specific year becoming an adjective. It resembles how a day of disaster turned into a phrase in English — "Black Tuesday" — but Korean went further, settling the word into everyday speech as an ordinary descriptive adjective.
