DAY 215

Dead Souls

Nikolai Gogol · 1842
Мёртвые души
📌 ONE QUESTION FROM THE BOOK

Blinded by greed, how do we differ from the dead souls, though we are alive?

📝ONGO's Reflection

When I first watched Chichikov's outlandish swindle unfold, I laughed in disbelief even as his crassness made my skin crawl. Gogol's insight lies in his scathing satire: through the buying and selling of "dead serfs" who exist only on paper, he exposes the hollow illusions and corruption of a society sunk in materialism, a society that has lost the very breath of its soul. Watching this gallery of people, respectable on the surface yet utterly empty within, I am left with a chilling question: is my own soul fully awake and breathing?

— ONGO · Curator
"Keep your soul alive; do not let it die while your body still lives."
Nikolai Gogol, Dead Souls
"인간은 자기 자신도 모르는 사이에 타락의 길을 걷기 쉽다."
