DAY 51

On Duties

Marcus Tullius Cicero · -44
De Officiis
📌 ONE QUESTION FROM THE BOOK

When my personal interest conflicts with moral duty, which path do I choose?

📝ONGO's Reflection

When I first opened this book, my heart stopped at the earnest counsel a great Roman statesman left to his son. Watching the fall of the Republic, Cicero wrote about "duty," the noblest value a human being must uphold. The duty he speaks of is not mere obedience to rules, but the choice that proves one's character at the decisive moment when self-interest collides with the good of the community. That is why, whenever I feel the temptation to compromise, I find myself taking out this book to read again.
