Reading the record of Thoreau, who went into the woods, built a log cabin, and lived there, I realized how much needless baggage my own life carries. He confesses that he went to the woods to front only the essential facts of life. Read again today, Walden is no simple ode to country living. It is a fierce declaration of independence, a resolve to step free of meaningless possessions and the eyes of others and to walk at a stride entirely my own. When you are out of breath from running to match everyone else's pace, this book makes you stop a while and look into the compass of your own soul.
