📖 Origin

In oracle-bone script, 來 was modeled on the drooping ears of a grain plant; originally it was the early form of '麥' (barley). Because barley was the grain that "comes" (i.e., ripens and arrives), the character was borrowed to mean "to come," and later '麥' was created separately to clarify the original sense of barley. By the small-seal script, it had taken on a form similar to today's.

🔍 Structure

來 is a pictograph formed as a single, indivisible unit.

來 is a distinctive character that came to mean "to approach" or "to arrive" by imitating the shape of barley. Though similar in form to '米' (rice), the two have different origins: 來 depicts barley ears while 米 depicts grains of rice. 來 carries the basic sense of movement through time and space — the idea of "coming."

🏛 Philosophy

Confucianism

Confucianism emphasizes cultivating the wisdom to understand the present through the past and to plan for the future. The Analects records, "The Master said: Reviewing what is old and knowing what is new — such a person may become a teacher" (溫故而知新, 可以為師矣), stressing that learning from the past illuminates the path forward into the future.

Taoism

Taoism values an attitude of living by flowing along with the natural order. The Daodejing states, "Heaven and earth are not benevolent; they treat all things as straw dogs" (天地不仁, 以萬物為芻狗), teaching that all things come and go according to nature's flow, and that one should accept what arrives naturally rather than pursue the artificial.

Buddhism

Buddhism holds that through reincarnation and the arrival of karmic ties, present deeds (karma) shape the future. According to the law of dependent origination (緣起法), all beings arise and pass away in mutual dependence, and the good or bad karma we create inevitably returns to us as its result.

Mencius

叟不遠千里而來 亦將有以利吾國乎 — The king said: "Venerable sir, you have come without regarding a thousand li as far; surely you too have something to benefit my state?" This dialogue shows that coming such a long way without hesitation must carry an important purpose.

🎭 K-Culture

K-POP/Drama

In K-POP lyrics, the sense of "coming" is used to convey hopeful messages such as "a new future will come to us." In historical dramas, too, the meaning of this character plays a key role in depicting the invasion of outside forces, as in "the enemy army comes charging in."

🌍 World Culture

World Culture

The concept of "coming" is also significant in Western cultures. In Christian culture, for instance, there is the faith in awaiting the Second Coming of the Messiah, which serves as a powerful symbol that salvation will "come" to humanity.

🤖 AI Era Lesson

"The character '來' signifies more than the physical act of "coming"; it symbolizes the ceaselessly arriving flow of new knowledge and skills. Rather than fearing the changes that approach, we must cultivate the wisdom to understand and embrace them. Just as barley ears naturally ripen when their time arrives, we need an attitude of accepting the future and advancing together toward a better life for humanity."

📜 Classical Poetry (1)

Spring Dawn (春曉)

Meng Haoran (689/690–740) — Tang

春眠不覺曉 處處聞啼鳥 夜來風雨聲 花落知多少

In spring sleep, unaware that dawn has come, everywhere I hear the cry of birds. In the night came the sound of wind and rain — how many petals, I wonder, have fallen?

In this poem, '夜來' means "come in the night" — that is, "during the night." It conveys the poet's delicate sensibility as he wonders how many petals fell from the wind and rain that blew through the night. Here '來' extends to mean that a phenomenon "occurs" or "comes about" within the passage of time.
