📖 Origin

The character 調 (jo) is a phono-semantic graph combining 言 (speech) with 周 (all around). 言 conveys the sense of 'to speak,' while 周 carries meanings of 'to reach everywhere,' 'surroundings,' and 'complete.' Originally it began from the sense of 'to investigate by speaking thoroughly' and 'to balance and even out through all-round adjustment.' It expresses the process of bringing various elements into harmony through speech, or of surveying a situation in full and adjusting it accordingly.

🔍 Structure

言 (speech) + 周 (all around) = 調 (to harmonize)

調 joins 言, meaning 'speech,' with 周, meaning 'all around' or 'well-rounded,' to form the sense of 'to adjust by speaking thoroughly' or 'to make even.' It is a typical phono-semantic character in which 言 carries the meaning and 周 the sound. Because 周 itself contains the sense of 'well-rounded' and 'complete,' it carries the deeper meaning of smoothly setting right a state of imbalance through speech. Indeed, 周 also holds the sense—like the Zhou dynasty—of unifying and completing all things, underscoring the importance of the act of adjusting and harmonizing.

🏛 Philosophy

Confucianism

Through 調, Confucianism prizes the values of 'harmony' and the 'doctrine of the mean.' As a core virtue of following the principles of all things in heaven and earth and fulfilling human relations, it seeks a state in which different things blend together to achieve a beautiful balance. The Analects says, "the noble person is harmonious but does not conform; the petty person conforms but is not harmonious," emphasizing the attitude of the noble person who pursues inner harmony even while differing on the surface.

Taoism

Taoism prizes harmony with nature—the state of wuwei ziran. It seeks a condition in which, without contrived intervention, one yields to the flow of nature so that one's inner self and the outer world come into harmonious balance. Zhuangzi declared that "heaven and earth are born together with me, and the ten thousand things are one with me," expounding a deep harmony with nature.

🤖 Lesson for Today

"As powerful intelligence permeates human society, 調 offers us an important lesson. Technological progress is remarkable, yet we need the wisdom to 'attune' its speed and direction so that it comes into 'harmony' with human values. As much as technical advance, the ethical and social dimensions must be ceaselessly 'tuned,' and a sense of balance is required to build a warm, human-centered future. For technology to become a tool that enriches our lives, we must never forget this principle of 'harmony' and 'adjustment.'"

📜 Classical Poetry (1)

Sent to Okdam

Yi Gok (1298-1351) — Goryeo dynasty

調琴撫瑟歲月新 此語何曾道昔人 君今已老我亦老 會看天涯兩鬢銀

Tuning the geomungo, stroking the pipa, the years grow new; / when have we ever heard such words from the ancients before? / You now have already grown old, and I too have grown old; / before long we shall see, at the world's edge, both temples turned silver.

In this poem 調琴 ("tuning the zither") conveys, through the act of tuning an instrument, the meaning of concord and harmony. Likening a long friendship to music, it expresses the sharing of deep, unchanging affection in terms of 'tuning.' The beauty of a relationship that remains unaltered through the passage of time appears here in deep connection with the meaning of 調.
