📜 THE VERSE

Feeling, thought, will, and awareness, like form, arise and pass without fixity. All are merely guests passing through the mind.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Am I handing over the whole inner room to one emotion that only stopped by?

📝Reflection

The earlier insight that "form is emptiness" this verse widens into the realm of mind — not only form, but feeling, thought, will, and awareness are all likewise. We readily admit the body changes, yet hold states of mind as if permanent. The present sorrow seems eternal; the present conviction seems absolutely right. But all these states of mind are guests, stopping by and leaving. Welcome guest or uneasy one, if you give over the inner room and let it settle in, the host gets dragged around by the guest. A guest can be served a cup of tea in the guest's seat. When sorrow comes, say "welcome" and let it stay — but do not hand over the whole house as if it were all of you. That bit of distance keeps the host's seat of the mind.

🌱Apply It Today

When a strong emotion visits today, host it inwardly: "a guest has come — I'll offer tea and see it off when it leaves."
