Chase Not the Past, Abide in Now
Chase not the past, yearn not for the future. The past has already vanished, the future has not yet come — only see clearly this present thing.
Is my mind here now, or has it gone off to the past or future?
📝Reflection
Called the verse of "the wise one who spends a single night well," this teaching compresses, most concisely, the art of living in the present. Most of our mental suffering comes from two places: regret over a past already gone and unredeemable, and anxiety over a future not yet come and unknown. Yet look closely — the past has vanished and is not; the future has not come and is not. What actually exists is only this present moment. Because of two times that do not exist, we miss the only one that does. This verse is not against analyzing the past or planning the future. It only says: do not let the mind be "captured" there and lose the now. When eating, eat; when walking, walk; when meeting someone, be wholly with them. Such a single night, abiding in now, is the wisest night of all.
🌱Apply It Today
For just one task today, set down thoughts of past and future and place your whole mind on it alone. Living in the now begins with one small thing.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
