In All Directions, Without Bound
Above, below, across — cultivate a boundless heart of kindness toward the whole world, unobstructed, without resentment, without enmity.
In which direction is my warmth blocked? Toward whom alone is it closed?
📝Reflection
If the previous verse was the depth of warmth, this is its direction — above, below, across, every way. Our hearts always have one side blocked: bowing to those above us and treating those below carelessly, or the reverse. This verse asks us to clear every blockage. The word "unobstructed" (asambādhaṃ) lingers. The moment we put a border on warmth, that border ends up caging our own heart. The energy spent hating someone always tires us more than it tires them. A heart open in all directions, in the end, sets us most free.
🌱Apply It Today
Picture the one person your heart is most closed to, and — even if you can't feel warmth — grant just one line: "they too must have their reasons."
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
