Neither Stained by the World, Nor Turning From It
In the midst of life, yet unstained by it; resting in stillness, yet not turning from the world. Standing in the mud, yet not becoming the mud.
Am I losing balance between two extremes — swept up by the world, or turning away from it entirely?
📝Reflection
There are two common traps in facing the world. One is being wholly stained and swept up by it; the other is, worn out by the world, turning one's back and hiding. The Vimalakirti Sutra points to a place beyond both extremes — being in the midst of the world yet unstained, knowing stillness yet not ignoring the world. This is the hardest and most mature way to live. The lotus metaphor lives again here: it roots in mud yet is not stained by it. We can live so too — within a fierce daily life, yet not selling even the soul to it; keeping the mind's stillness, yet not ignoring the world's pain. Neither escape nor sinking, but walking the road between. One who stands in the mud yet does not become the mud — that is the strongest person.
🌱Apply It Today
When you're too swept up in work or tempted to drop it all today, ask: "what is the middle road — neither stained nor turning away?"
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
