The Ordinary Mind Is the Way
Asked what the Way is, the answer came: the ordinary mind — your plain everyday mind — is itself the Way.
Chasing some special state, am I belittling the mind that simply lives this ordinary day?
📝Reflection
When Zhaozhou asked his teacher about the Way, the answer was "the ordinary mind is the Way." We hear "the Way" and picture some extraordinary, transcendent state. So we treat ordinary daily life not as the Way but as a tedious corridor leading toward it. Zhaozhou's teacher said the opposite: the plain mind that eats, sleeps, and works — that very mind is the Way. To wander in search of special ecstasy is precisely the road away from it. Truth hides not in the non-ordinary. It is in the fingertips washing dishes, in the night spent putting a child to sleep, in the footsteps of the commute. The mind that belittles the ordinary is the mind that misses the Way. To live the most ordinary day as something precious — that is the Way Zhaozhou taught all his life.
🌱Apply It Today
Take the most boring daily motion today (brushing teeth, folding laundry) and, just once, do it carefully as if it were everything. You may taste a hint of what "the ordinary mind is the Way" means.
