DAY 232

The Light That Shines Alone

📜 THE VERSE

Right upon this single thought, there shines a clear and steady light.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

The awareness that notices this very thought — have I ever once turned to look at it?

📝Reflection

Linji spoke of no faraway enlightenment. He said that right upon this single thought arising now, a clear light always shines. Thoughts rise and vanish without cease: joy, irritation, hunger. They drift past like clouds. Yet something that notices every one of them is always there — the one that knows anger even amid anger, that knows sorrow even in sorrow. Linji called that unchanging noticing the "clear light." We are so absorbed in the clouds (the thoughts) that we forget the light. Stop the thinking for a moment and ask, "Who is it that notices this right now?" — and for an instant, that light shows itself.

🌱Apply It Today

When a strong emotion rises today, instead of drowning in it, notice once: "There is something here watching this emotion." That step back is near to Linji's light.
