敎授
교수
敎 (to teach) + 授 (to give)
📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "授" depicts hand (扌) and receive (受) — to give, transmit. "敎授" = "one who teaches and transmits". Originally a formal post at Seonggyungwan (Joseon's national academy) since 1398, codified in 「Gyeongguk Daejeon」 (1485). The modern professor rank existed 600 years ago.
"敎授 transmits received knowledge to the next — the duty of one generation."
