미국으로 건너간 이민자 음식
1850~1900년 약 5백만 명의 독일인이 미국으로 이민. 햄버그 스테이크가 함께 건너갔다. 미국 식당 메뉴에 "Hamburg-style steak" 등장. 처음엔 접시에 담긴 고기. 빵은 없었다.
1885년, 빵 사이에 끼워
여러 발명자 후보가 있다 — Charlie Nagreen(위스콘신), Frank/Charles Menches 형제(오하이오), Louis Lassen(코네티컷). 모두 1885년경 거리 노점에서 햄버그 스테이크를 빵에 끼워 팔기 시작. 이동성·휴대성이 미국식 패스트푸드 문화의 시작.
