For a composer, the beginning of losing his hearing was a death sentence. Beethoven thought of death; he even wrote his will. And yet upon that despair he completed the Ninth Symphony — music he could never himself hear. The "Ode to Joy" is the greatest gift a man who could not hear gave to those who could. We too have things we are losing. Beethoven proved, with his entire life, what can be built upon what is lost. When fate knocked at the door, he turned that knocking into the opening bars of music.
